Windows, doors and other exterior openings interrupt the protective shell of the building. If a major opening is breached, wind and rain can enter and internal pressure conditions can change, adding to the demands on the wider structure.
These are related but different performance questions. A product that resists high pressure is not automatically impact rated, and neither claim replaces proper window, threshold, flashing and drainage design.
Conventional windows, wide sliding doors, entrance doors, balconies, garages, shopfronts and plant openings each have different operational and structural requirements.
