Hurricane shutters or impact windows? The best answer is often both.

Shutters create deployable external protection. Impact windows build protection into the opening itself. The right choice depends on whether the building is new or existing, opening size, occupancy, architecture, deployment requirements and budget priorities.

Shutters are active protection.

Roll-down, accordion, Bahama, Colonial and fabric systems need to be closed or installed before the storm. Permanently attached shutters can make that process much faster than loose panels.

Impact windows are passive protection.

Where the impact window satisfies the applicable project requirements, the protection remains present without a separate deployment step. This can be valuable for vacant properties, upper levels, hotels and apartments.

Existing buildings often make shutters attractive.

If good windows and doors are staying in place, external shutters can add protection without replacing every opening. Large sliders and balconies can also be strong shutter applications.
