Fiji: Learning from Ridge to Reef

Catchment connections, Fiji's developing ocean-planning framework and locally accountable discussion.

THE LEARNING QUESTION

What can a learner responsibly say about watershed change without claiming the cause or permission for action?

For school teachers and coastal community educators. These learning activities do not represent actual local environmental or health interventions.

BEFORE FACILITATING

Prepare with the right boundaries.

01

Choose a fictional catchment or an approved non-sensitive mapping example.

02

Check current Fiji Government and MECC sources, not just the teaching extract.

03

Explain that cultural and customary marine rights cannot be inferred from a national announcement.

A COMPLETE EDUCATIONAL SESSION

Four evidence-led activities.

The actions and time allocations form a complete 65-minute suggested class. Each outcome is a learning record, not proof of a real project.

01
15 minutes

Map a fictional island catchment

Mark uplands, settlement, drainage, freshwater, estuary and reef on a conceptual map. Use arrows only for plausible flows.

Expected learning record: Conceptual catchment-to-reef map
02
15 minutes

Distinguish policy from approval

Read the dated Fiji Cabinet planning statement. Have learners label the decision to develop regulations separately from enacted local permission.

Expected learning record: Two-column policy-status summary
03
20 minutes

Hear the missing perspectives

Use fictional roles for local rights holders, affected users, fisheries and environmental offices. Frame respectful consultation questions.

Expected learning record: Generic decision-rights map
04
15 minutes

Correct the overclaim

Rewrite 'we have proved the new road harmed this reef' to show the observation, uncertainty and appropriate next check.

Expected learning record: Evidence-led public statement
PRIVATE DISCUSSION WORKSHEET

Ask the questions that matter.

Responses stay on the visitor's device; they are included only in the locally generated text export, and must not contain personal or culturally sensitive information.

UNDERSTANDING CHECK

Can a Cabinet decision to develop regulations itself authorise coastal restoration?

No. It indicates a policy-development step. Local rights, enacted regulations and project permissions require separate verification.

PRIMARY-SOURCE ACTIVITY

Compare Fiji MECC's national oceans overview with Fiji Cabinet's dated September 2026 decision. Identify what each does not establish.

KEEP YOUR FACILITATOR RECORD

Free to use, free to share responsibly.

Export your session stages, notes, source links, learning check and local safeguards. The export is a plain text document, not an official certificate.
