Mangroves and Coastal Habitats

Explore the role of mangroves and seagrass, common misconceptions and how communities can examine coastal change.

THE CORE IDEA

Healthy coastal habitats provide important services, but local ecosystems and governance differ across islands.

LEARN / THREE USEFUL IDEAS
01

What mangroves can do

Depending on species and location, mangroves can stabilise sediments, provide nursery habitat and influence wave and water movement. They are not a universal solution to every coastal hazard.

02

Seagrass matters too

Seagrass meadows can provide habitats, help stabilise seabed sediments and support nearshore food webs. Their presence and ecological roles vary by site.

03

Restoration is not a beginner activity

Planting the wrong species, in the wrong tidal zone or without rights-holder agreement can fail or damage habitat. Restoration requires site-specific science and authorisation.

PRACTISE / GUIDED ACTIVITY

Draft a habitat observation discussion

This is a discussion exercise, not a technical field assessment.

  1. Write a map of places community members already know and use.
  2. Identify whose knowledge and rights relate to each place.
  3. List habitat questions for the relevant environment authority or qualified conservation team.
Useful outcome: A rights-respecting habitat discussion record.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Should a group plant mangroves immediately if a beach appears to be eroding?
