Weathered steel surface and folded edge detail

Weathered steel

A surface designed to change.

Weathered steel develops a changing oxide patina rather than remaining visually static. Colour, tone and texture vary with exposure, drainage and wet-dry cycling. Early weathering runoff can stain pale or porous adjacent surfaces, so detailing matters.

Technical planning

Confirm the project before manufacture.

These points are reviewed as part of product selection and quotation. Exact requirements depend on the product configuration, site and destination.

  • Size the planter around the mature plant rather than appearance alone
  • Confirm drainage, overflow and irrigation approach
  • Review filled weight for decks, roofs, balconies and suspended slabs
  • Allow for early weathering runoff near pale or porous paving
  • Large specimen trees and elevated installations may require structural review
