Volleyball facility planning starts with the court but cannot stop there. FIVB's current rules define an 18 × 9 m playing court, a minimum 3 m free zone for general play and minimum unobstructed height requirements. Higher-level competition needs larger clearances.
The standard playing court is 18 × 9 m. FIVB rules identify at least 3 m of free zone around the court and at least 7 m of unobstructed height for general play; international competition requirements are larger.
Post positions, sockets or portable bases, net tension, referee stand and protection should be planned with the floor and circulation rather than added later.
Surface flatness, slip resistance, cushioning, line marking, maintenance and drainage should follow the environment and user level. Outdoor courts need a drainage strategy as well as sport performance.
Schools, clubs and event halls may need divider curtains, retractable posts, equipment stores, scorer positions, spectator aisles and safe changeover between sports.
Current FIVB rules and competition regulations should be checked for the intended level. Local building, fire, electrical, accessibility and structural requirements remain destination-specific.
