Severe-weather planning starts with the building, not the shutter. Map every exterior opening and vulnerable envelope interface, then select the appropriate permanent, deployable or specialist protection pathway for each one.

Keep protection families distinct
Roll-down, accordion, Bahama, Colonial, impact windows and doors, large-opening systems, hurricane fabric and storm louvres solve different architectural and operational problems. An ordinary outdoor blind or decorative shutter is not a hurricane-protection substitute.
Use exact evidence
Opening dimensions, positive and negative design pressure, impact requirement, guides or frames, anchors and substrate can change performance. Do not use Category 4 or Category 5 shorthand as a product rating and do not apply one wind or impact claim across every size.
Plan operation before the season
Motorised systems need a power-loss and manual-override strategy where supported. Removable systems need labelled storage and a deployment plan. Resorts and multi-building sites should test the process before severe-weather season.
