Artificial Turf Selection, Base & Drainage Guide

Artificial turf should be selected as a complete surface build-up, not by pile height or appearance alone. The supporting base, drainage route, traffic, intended activity, yarn construction, backing, seams, edges and maintenance plan all affect which turf pathway fits a project.

Planning guidance — final supplied configuration remains project-specific.

01

Start with the real use, not the colour

Residential landscaping, school recreation, golf practice, sports-adjacent areas, events and high-use commercial spaces place different demands on artificial turf. Record the intended activity, traffic, visual expectation and maintenance model before comparing pile constructions.

A dense short-pile product can suit a very different job from a longer landscape turf or an infill sports-grass system, even when all three look similar in a small sample.

02

Treat the base and drainage as part of the turf system

Artificial turf does not correct an unstable, poorly graded or waterlogged base. The project team should resolve subgrade stability, falls, drainage outlets, edge restraint and the selected aggregate or slab build-up before the turf is installed.

Permeable backing can allow water through the turf layer, but the layers below still need a reliable route to drain. Base preparation and local installation design remain site-specific.

03

Match pile, density and yarn profile to the application

Pile height is only one specification. Density, yarn shape, thatch, backing and intended infill all influence appearance, recovery, stability and the way the surface behaves under traffic.

Apollo's current pathways include dense 10–15 mm landscape turf, 25–45 mm U- and M-profile landscape constructions, 40–50 mm infill sports grass, 25–30 mm non-infill sports grass and dense 10 mm golf/recreation turf.

04

Plan seams, edges and roll layout before ordering

Roll width, pile direction, seam locations, waste, transitions and perimeter fixing should be planned from the actual site dimensions. Poor seam planning can create unnecessary joins or visible changes in pile direction.

Custom roll formats may reduce waste on some projects, but the final layout should be confirmed before quantities are frozen.

05

Freeze maintenance and installation responsibilities

Cleaning, brushing, infill maintenance where applicable, local repairs and access to compatible replacement material should be considered during selection rather than after installation.

Apollo supplies the selected turf product and available product information. Site preparation, drainage design, installation, local compliance and final build-up remain project-specific unless expressly included in the quoted scope.
