Fire Pit vs Outdoor Fireplace: What Changes?

The main difference is not simply appearance. An open fire pit radiates into a gathering circle, while a fireplace format can direct heat and smoke differently and may introduce chimney, flue, support and enclosure considerations.

Planning guidance — final supplied configuration remains project-specific.

01

Choose around the gathering pattern

A fire pit naturally supports seating around multiple sides. A fireplace creates a more directional focal point and can work differently against walls, terraces or architectural structures.

02

A chimney does not remove the need for planning

Flue height, draft, combustible clearances, nearby roof structures and local requirements still need project-specific review. Use the exact appliance and chimney instructions rather than assuming a masonry-looking form is automatically suitable.
