Playing surface vs overall footprint
For formal 3x3, the 15 x 11 m playing surface is the sport geometry. The wider 18 x 14 m reference helps plan the backstop and free-space envelope; event, spectator and service areas sit outside that baseline.
Project BriefKNOTTR TECHNICAL REFERENCE
The formal playing surface is not the complete project footprint. Use the regulation court as the anchor, then protect the equipment, free-space, scorer, player, spectator and service zones around it.
PLANNING REFERENCE
This page answers one narrow planning question. Use the Technical Centre and Project Brief for the complete 3x3 system.
For formal 3x3, the 15 x 11 m playing surface is the sport geometry. The wider 18 x 14 m reference helps plan the backstop and free-space envelope; event, spectator and service areas sit outside that baseline.
If formal competition is intended, preserve the playing geometry. A smaller recreation court can be a deliberate community decision, but it should not be presented as a formal competition court.
Two or more courts should be planned with shared circulation, storage, lighting, spectator areas and technology without using the safety envelope as a walkway.
PROJECT CHECK
Measure the full available site
Confirm formal competition or recreation intent
Reserve backstop and free-space envelope
Keep spectators and barriers outside active play
Coordinate lighting, gates and accessible circulation
CONTINUE THE KNOTTR PATHWAY
Planning anchors follow current FIBA 3x3 equipment and outdoor-facility guidance; verify the current governing documents for final competition specification.
