Water pressure increases with depth.
POOLS · ARCHITECTURAL WINDOWS
Architectural pool windows: glass vs PMMA.
The right transparent material depends on opening size, water depth, support condition and the selected pool-window system—not appearance alone.
SHORT ANSWER
Use opening geometry and water pressure to choose the window pathway.
Tempered/laminated glass can suit smaller/shallow openings where the exact window system supports it. PMMA becomes attractive for larger/deeper viewing panels because thickness, flexural behaviour and fabrication options differ. Final material/thickness must come from exact-system engineering.
KEY PROJECT POINTS
What should drive the decision.
These are project inputs, not substitute engineering or automatic product approvals.
Opening width/height and support condition control panel stress.
Framed and frameless systems have different load/seal paths.
Glass and PMMA behave differently structurally and optically.
Seal design and substrate/frame tolerance are critical.
Large panels need lifting/handling planning.
COMPARISON
Use-case fit before product preference.
The table is deliberately directional. Exact configurations still require project and evidence review.
| Pathway | Best fit | Watch closely |
|---|---|---|
| Tempered / laminated glass pathway | Smaller or shallower architectural windows where the selected system is designed for glass. | Exact laminate/tempering build-up, edge support, thickness and impact/safety requirements. |
| PMMA / acrylic pathway | Larger/deeper viewing panels and applications where a thick cast transparent panel is advantageous. | Exact grade, thickness, thermal movement, optical quality, scratch care and specialist handling. |
Depth drives pressure
Hydrostatic pressure is low near the surface and higher at the bottom of the panel. Window design must use the actual water depth and panel geometry.
Frame condition changes the panel behaviour
A fully framed panel and a frameless architectural panel do not share the same support or seal assumptions.
The seal is part of the structure
Dual seals, compression, compatible materials and installation tolerances should be treated as engineered system components.
Plan handling before manufacture
Large transparent panels can be heavy and vulnerable during shipping/lifting; crate design, access and installation equipment should be defined early.
PROJECT INPUTS
What to have ready before asking for the exact system.
A stronger brief shortens the gap between product interest and a useful technical/commercial response.

EVIDENCE BOUNDARY
Never publish a universal glass/PMMA maximum without the exact system conditions.
Use project-specific hydrostatic calculations, panel dimensions, material grade, thickness, support condition and seal details. Apollo's public reference limits should not be extrapolated beyond their documented context.
FAQ
Questions project teams usually need answered.
Is PMMA always better than glass for pool windows?
No. Each material has different strengths, thickness, handling and optical considerations.
Can window thickness be chosen from width alone?
No. Height, depth, support, material properties and safety factors also matter.
Are large pool windows standard products?
They are usually project-qualified because geometry, pressure, frame and handling conditions vary.
