Complete Outdoor Roof System Planning Guide

The strongest outdoor-roof projects start with the structure and the way the space needs to operate. Decide how the roof relates to the building, how often it should open, where water goes and whether blinds or glass will be added before choosing the final system.

Planning guidance — final supplied configuration remains project-specific.

01

Start with the structural relationship

Freestanding, wall-mounted and roof-only retrofit pathways create different support, fixing and drainage interfaces. Record the intended relationship to the existing building before choosing accessories or finishes.

A roof-only retrofit is an interface with an existing frame. The local project team must confirm that supporting structure, foundations and fixings are suitable for the final configuration.

02

Decide how the roof should move

Fixed cover, adjustable louvres and retractable roof systems create different operating experiences. The useful question is how often the space should open to sun and sky, how much ventilation is wanted and how the roof will be operated during changing weather.

03

Plan water before finishes

Integrated gutters and concealed drainage improve the architecture, but water still needs a practical discharge route. Decks, paving, thresholds and downstream stormwater should be considered with the roof rather than after it arrives.

04

Declare future enclosure early

Blinds, glass or solid side systems can materially change airflow and wind behaviour. If enclosure is likely later, state it in the original brief so the roof is not reviewed only as an open structure.

05

Keep project-specific responsibilities clear

Apollo supplies the selected system and available product documentation. Foundations, structural review, electrical work, drainage discharge, installation and local approvals remain site-specific unless separately quoted by the relevant project parties.
