How Dry Should Firewood Be?

For cleaner, hotter and more predictable burning, firewood should be properly seasoned and dry. Moisture content is more useful than age alone because storage and species can change how quickly wood actually dries.

Use moisture as a practical check

U.S. EPA Burn Wise material commonly used about 20 percent moisture content or lower as a practical target for good wood burning. The exact fuel requirements of the appliance still control.

Test on a freshly split internal face rather than relying only on the dry outer surface.

Seasoning time is not universal

Softwood, hardwood, climate, piece size and storage conditions all affect drying. Split, ventilated wood generally seasons more reliably than large unsplit rounds stacked in a sealed pile.
