How Should Ash and Embers Be Handled After an Outdoor Fire?

A fire is not finished when the flame disappears. Ash can insulate hot embers for a long time, so shutdown and disposal need the same level of control as lighting the fire.

Allow the fire to reach a controlled end state

Stop adding fuel early enough for the fire to burn down under supervision. Follow the product instructions for extinguishing; some refractory ovens should not be rapidly cooled with water.

Do not move ash simply because it looks grey. Hot embers can remain hidden below the surface.

Use a non-combustible container when ash is removed

Once the appliance instructions permit removal, place ash and embers in a suitable metal container away from combustible materials until completely cold. Do not use plastic, cardboard or combustible bins for warm ash.
