Dive Computer vs GPS Sports Watch

A GPS sports watch can be excellent above water and still not be a dive computer. A documented dive computer is built around underwater information and dive-specific operating logic.

Planning guidance — final supplied configuration remains project-specific.

01

Dive computers prioritise underwater decisions

Documented dive computers can include depth sensing, dive modes, decompression algorithms, gas settings, alarms and dive logs. The exact functions vary by model and must be checked in current product information.

02

GPS sports watches prioritise surface activity and navigation

Adventure watches commonly focus on GNSS, maps, tracks, altitude, compass and multisport activity. Some products combine both categories, but only where the dive functions are explicitly documented.

03

Do not choose by appearance

Two watch-shaped devices can have completely different intended uses and safety documentation. Select around the activity and current manual rather than case style or screen size.
