01Confirm the approximate installation age and, if possible, the existing turf / system identity.

02Review historic ponding and obtain site / drainage information before assuming the surface alone is the problem.

03Inspect and, where relevant, test the existing shock / elastic layer before deciding whether it can be retained.

04Confirm the condition of the existing drainage network and any settlement or blocked discharge points.

05Locate historic field tests or certification records where the replacement project has a formal performance requirement.

06Assign responsibility for turf removal, infill recovery, disposal / recovery and site cleaning.

Existing lower layers are assets only if their condition is known.

Reuse of a shock layer, base or drainage system should be an evidence-based project decision. Age alone does not prove that a layer is suitable or unsuitable for the proposed new surface.
