Functional Fitness Academy
Training floor and race-preparation planning workbook
How to use this workbook
Work through only the modules relevant to the project. Record confirmed decisions, unresolved questions and information still needed. The live Academy can save the same decisions into Your Facility Plan and My Apollo Project.
This is a planning workbook, not a construction drawing, professional design, accreditation or approval document.
Define the operating model and peak training load
Start with facility type, training focus, class size and session flow before laying out surfaces or equipment.
□ Is the facility boutique, commercial, performance, school or hospitality?
□ What is the peak athlete count per session?
□ Is the focus race training, hybrid fitness, strength or group training?
Map the training zones before choosing flooring
Place strength, cardio, free weights, sled lanes, circulation, storage and flexible areas on the floor plan first.
□ Where are doors, columns and emergency routes?
□ Which activities need dedicated space?
□ What areas must stay flexible for class rotation?
Check the slab and floor build-up
Review substrate condition, levels, moisture, transitions and equipment loads before selecting rubber, turf or impact systems.
□ What slab or subfloor exists?
□ Are level changes or moisture issues present?
□ What concentrated equipment or drop loads must be supported?
Choose rubber tiles and rolls by zone
Use local replaceability, joints, continuous coverage, impact and maintenance needs to decide where tiles or rolls fit.
□ Where is local replacement valuable?
□ Where is continuous coverage preferred?
□ Do high-impact areas need a separate heavier build-up?
Treat lifting and impact areas as specialist zones
Coordinate platforms, free weights, racks, impact transmission and surrounding transitions around the actual loads.
□ What equipment and drop behaviour occur in the zone?
□ Does the floor need acoustic or vibration review?
□ How do platforms meet adjacent rubber or turf?
Plan sled and movement lanes around repetition
Coordinate lane length, friction, turnaround, seam direction, wear and traffic so repeated push-pull work does not conflict with other training.
□ How many sled lanes are needed?
□ What lane length and turnaround space are available?
□ Where do athletes enter and leave the lane?
Coordinate rigs, wall-ball and fixed interfaces
Resolve floor or wall interfaces, working clearances, athlete flow and station spacing before fixed equipment is installed.
□ Which systems are wall- or floor-fixed?
□ What clear working envelope is required?
□ Can adjacent stations operate at the same time safely?
Set equipment quantities from class rotation
Use peak athletes, station timing and coaching model rather than room area alone to decide how many machines, sleds and loaded implements are required.
□ How many athletes share each station?
□ Which stations need duplication at peak sessions?
□ Where do unused implements wait between rotations?
Plan circulation, loaded carries and open movement
Keep carry routes, lunges, broad jumps and general movement clear of racks, machines, sled returns and storage.
□ Where are the main athlete travel paths?
□ Do loaded carries cross other stations?
□ Is there enough open floor for repeated movement work?
Build storage into the training floor
Use equipment storage and zoning to keep busy class environments legible, safe and fast to reset.
□ What equipment needs immediate access?
□ Can heavy equipment be stored close to its use zone?
□ Does storage obstruct circulation or emergency routes?
Plan maintenance, replacement and future changes
Choose surfaces and layouts that can be cleaned, repaired and adapted as equipment and programming change.
□ What areas will wear fastest?
□ Can local sections be replaced without closing the whole facility?
□ What spare surface or compatible repair stock should be retained?
Build the TORVYR project brief
Bring floor plan, peak load, training focus, lanes, surfaces, equipment and local responsibilities into one project review package.
□ Are room dimensions, doors and columns documented?
□ Is peak class size and station flow defined?
□ What installation, slab, electrical and local compliance responsibilities remain outside supply?
