Badminton Academy
Global court, clear-space and hall planning workbook
How to use this workbook
Work through only the modules relevant to the project. Record confirmed decisions, unresolved questions and information still needed. The live Academy can save the same decisions into Your Facility Plan and My Apollo Project.
This is a planning workbook, not a construction drawing, professional design, accreditation or approval document.
Start with the BWF court and clear-space envelope
Use the full court and appropriate side, rear and between-court clearances as the starting geometry for the hall.
□ Singles, doubles or both?
□ How many courts operate at once?
□ What clear space exists behind and beside each court?
Define players, sessions and court count
Match the hall to school classes, club sessions, coaching, leagues and competition turnover.
□ What is peak simultaneous player count?
□ How many courts are needed for normal operation?
□ Does the venue host tournaments?
Protect clear height and shuttle flight
Keep structure, lights, ducts, banners and equipment out of the critical overhead playing volume.
□ What is the lowest obstruction?
□ Are beams or services over the court?
□ Can retractable equipment clear the shuttle path?
Control lighting and visual background
Plan fixture position, glare, contrast and wall or curtain backgrounds around shuttle visibility.
□ Do players face bright windows or fixtures?
□ Are dark backdrops available behind shuttle paths?
□ Can lighting serve multiple courts evenly?
Manage airflow before fit-out
Limit disruptive air movement from HVAC, doors and fans because shuttle flight is sensitive to drafts.
□ Where are supply and return air points?
□ Do doors create cross-drafts?
□ Can airflow be managed during competition?
Choose the playing surface
Select a floor around traction, cushioning, subfloor condition, cleaning, portability and multi-use.
□ Permanent hall floor or roll-out competition surface?
□ What base or subfloor exists?
□ How often does the hall convert?
Plan posts, nets and court changeover
Coordinate post bases, net systems, umpire equipment and storage around safe multi-court setup.
□ Portable or socketed posts?
□ Where will equipment store?
□ How fast must courts change between uses?
Plan divider curtains and adjacent courts
Separate active courts and circulation without reducing required clear space or exit paths.
□ Are divider curtains needed?
□ What aisle is needed between banks of courts?
□ Where are emergency routes?
Plan players, officials and spectators
Keep waiting players, coaches, umpires and spectators out of court clearances and circulation.
□ Where do players queue?
□ Are umpire chairs or scorer positions required?
□ How are spectators separated from active courts?
Plan shared-school or club use
Coordinate badminton with volleyball, futsal, basketball and PE without losing visibility or creating unsafe equipment conflicts.
□ Which sports share the hall?
□ What line hierarchy is required?
□ What equipment must retract or move?
Plan maintenance and floor protection
Include cleaning, surface repair, post inspection, net replacement and event-floor handling in the operating model.
□ Who maintains the floor?
□ How are roll-out surfaces stored if used?
□ What inspection routine applies to posts and nets?
Build the badminton project brief
Bring court count, clearances, height, airflow, lighting, flooring, posts and local responsibilities into one package.
□ Are measured hall dimensions documented?
□ Is the intended BWF or local level clear?
□ What local building and services work remains?
