KAVORA · SYSTEM SELECTION

Architectural umbrella vs awning vs membrane shade.

All three create shade, but they place structure, movement, drainage and wind risk in very different places.

SHORT ANSWER

Choose by footprint, mounting and operating behaviour—not by canopy appearance.

Use a giant architectural umbrella where freestanding flexible shade is the priority, an awning where façade mounting and retractable projection make sense, and membrane shade where larger-span or sculptural fixed tensioned cover is the design intent.

KEY PROJECT POINTS

What should drive the decision.

These are project inputs, not substitute engineering or automatic product approvals.

01

Freestanding umbrellas need foundation/base and operating clearance.

02

Awnings transfer loads into the façade/substrate.

03

Membranes depend on tension geometry and drainage.

04

Wind limits differ between deployed and stowed states.

05

Rain performance is not identical to waterproof roofing.

06

Motor/controls and storm procedures should be specified early.

COMPARISON

Use-case fit before product preference.

The table is deliberately directional. Exact configurations still require project and evidence review.

PathwayBest fitWatch closely
Giant umbrellaResort pool decks, terraces, dining zones and flexible freestanding shade.Foundation/base, mast position, folding envelope, wind procedure and furniture clearance.
AwningFaçade-connected terraces, retail frontage and hospitality edges needing retractable projection.Wall substrate, projection, cassette, pitch/drainage, wind sensors and electrical interface.
Membrane shadeLarger-span or sculptural shade where fixed tensioned geometry is acceptable.Tension, drainage low points, support reactions, fabric evidence and specialist installation.
01

Start with what must stay clear

Dining layouts, pool circulation, vehicle access, views and service routes determine where posts, masts or façade brackets can sit.

02

Separate shade from weatherproof cover

Some shade systems can handle light rain, but they should not be described as equivalent to a permanent waterproof roof unless exact evidence supports that use.

03

Map deployment and stowage

Moving shade needs clear operating zones, safe controls, wind procedures and a known stowed configuration.

04

Coordinate foundations and fixings

The shade fabric may be light, but wind reactions can be significant. Base/fixing design remains project-specific.

PROJECT INPUTS

What to have ready before asking for the exact system.

A stronger brief shortens the gap between product interest and a useful technical/commercial response.

EVIDENCE BOUNDARY

Wind evidence must state the exact system and operating state.

Published wind figures should identify the exact umbrella/awning/membrane configuration, dimensions and whether the system is deployed or stowed. Project foundations and fixings remain site-specific.

FAQ

Questions project teams usually need answered.

Is a giant umbrella the same as a fixed canopy?

No. Umbrellas are operable/folding systems with different foundations, wind procedures and maintenance.

Can an awning replace a waterproof roof?

Not automatically. Rain resistance, pitch, drainage and operating limits depend on the exact awning.

Which system works best around pool furniture?

It depends on mast/post positions, folding envelope and desired circulation; giant umbrellas are often useful where freestanding flexible coverage is valuable.
