Louvre Pergola Drainage: What Happens to Rainwater When the Roof Closes?

Closing adjustable louvres can provide useful overhead rain protection, but the water still has to be collected and discharged somewhere. Drainage should be treated as part of the site design, not hidden inside the product description.

The roof collects water

When the louvres close, water is directed toward the integrated gutter system. The frame then needs a clear path to move that water through or down the structure.

Internal drainage still needs an outlet

Concealed or internal water pathways improve the appearance of the structure, but they must discharge to a suitable site location. That final connection remains part of the local project design.

Check surrounding levels

Decks, paving, garden areas and building thresholds can all affect where water should go. A pergola should not create a new concentration of water against the house or an unsuitable low point.

Allow for maintenance

Leaves and debris can enter gutters and drainage channels. Access for periodic cleaning should be considered, especially where trees overhang the structure.
