RIGVAR + ROKVAN · VEHICLE LOAD

Dynamic vs static roof load for rooftop tents.

The roof sees one load while driving and a different condition when parked. The lower rated component in the roof/rack/mounting chain controls the setup.

SHORT ANSWER

Use dynamic ratings for travel and verify static/sleeping loads separately.

Subtract rack/crossbar and mounted-system mass from the verified vehicle/rack dynamic limit for travel. Separately confirm the parked/static capacity and mounting system for occupants. Do not infer one limit from the other.

KEY PROJECT POINTS

What should drive the decision.

These are project inputs, not substitute engineering or automatic product approvals.

01

Dynamic rating applies while the vehicle is moving.

02

Static sleeping load includes occupants and tent loads when parked.

03

Rack/crossbar limits can be lower than the vehicle roof claim.

04

Off-road use may require derating.

05

Accessories on the rack consume travel-load margin.

06

Payload and axle loads still matter even if roof rating is adequate.

COMPARISON

Use-case fit before product preference.

The table is deliberately directional. Exact configurations still require project and evidence review.

01

Find the limiting component

Vehicle roof, factory rails, aftermarket rack, crossbars and tent brackets can all have different ratings.

02

Include the rack mass

A 20 kg rack reduces the remaining dynamic allowance before the tent or accessories are added.

03

Do not ignore total vehicle payload

Water, passengers, gear and roof systems all contribute to gross vehicle and axle loads.

04

Re-check after modifications

Suspension, canopy, drawer and roof changes can shift mass distribution even when individual component ratings appear acceptable.

PROJECT INPUTS

What to have ready before asking for the exact system.

A stronger brief shortens the gap between product interest and a useful technical/commercial response.

EVIDENCE BOUNDARY

Roof fitment requires exact vehicle and rack data.

Apollo's arithmetic tool cannot approve fitment. Verify the exact vehicle manufacturer, rack/crossbar manufacturer and product mounting instructions, including any off-road reductions.

FAQ

Questions project teams usually need answered.

Can I use the static roof rating for driving?

No. Travel should be checked against the applicable dynamic rating.

Does a rooftop tent's sleeping capacity prove my vehicle can carry it?

No. Vehicle/rack dynamic and static limits must be verified separately.

Does water stored inside the vehicle affect roof load?

Not directly, but it affects payload and axle loading, which still matters to the complete setup.
